New location

So here in New England we apparently now have a 'rainy season', go figure.  for the last week it has rained once a day, sometimes very hard.  The forecast calls for rain for another week at least.  Today we have a flood warning.  Soooo painting outside, even under a tent is not the greatest plan.   Here is plan B.  The porch.  A little cramped, but with the help of a fan a little dryer.  Did I mention the humidity?  70%!!!  This IS New England right?  Enough complaining, it is still more fun to paint on a rainy day than not to paint on a sunny one!  :)
What you are looking at is the under-painting, if your not familure with the term look up the postings for November 2008 where I show the steps from composing to finished painting.  The colors will change, for the most part my underpainting are the deepest tones or the shadows of the true colors.  This will be most evident in the base that will be lightly colored sand when it is done.  I'll update the progress - later.

Fun summer project

So I'm back in my dad's driveway painting another fiberglass public art project.  This time it's a turtle that will soon be 'Swimming' all the way to Florida!  The design is not my own, each artist was given a design to execute based on a theme.  Mine is Mardi Gras and the design is very graphic with bold colors and a geometric look, tricky on a 3D object.  I think it's going well and it's always fun to have a nice big thing to paint.  Check in later, I will put up more pictures as the project progresses.

Nate's Diner

This is one of my 3D added paintings, the spoon, plate, knife, napkin and plate were attached to a 16x20 inch canvas before painting over in acrylic.  The photo does not reflect the the application as well as I would like.  Photo taken on a phone as an after thought. (not all of my paintings get on the blog)  This was a gift to my son and the photo taken after it was given.  Also missing is the black and white checkerboard pattern on the edges of the frame, which add to the retro look.  I'm currently working on a couple more 3D peices right now, the application process is really fun, though the painting over the objects makes perspective a bit tricky.

Last Painting of 2012

This is one of my 'just let it evolve' paintings, where I don't have a plan.  I painted the background and it sat for a few weeks, later I added the geometric cubes and left it for a few days.  I don't really think or consider what I am painting before or while I am working on these.  Lastly the road and men were added, upon reflection I guess the 'times' and current predictions of 'end times', surely played a part in this non-planned work.    The few I do in this way are usually completely of my imagination, as I just sit down and paint without thinking.  Sometimes I an listening to a book on tape, or talking on the phone, so I truely am not actively thinking about what I am painting.   Most often my paintings are planned, and I basically know what I want before I even sketch it out.   It is 11x14 stretched canvas with acrylic, and the last painting of the year.  Happy New Year!   :)

Celtic Fire

This study in warm colors is a landscape of two actual Celtic places.  In the foreground we have  Poulnabrone  (The Hole of Sorrows)  a dolmen located in North Clare Ireland, and the background is Kilechurn Castle on Loch Awe in Argyll Scotland.  The cloudy sunset is from my imagination.  A warm change from the last picture, and from the weather we are having right now.  It's an 18x24 acrylic painted round the edges.  I never tire of monotones or castles, hope you enjoy!
